I have a female about to come of age and the only male who looks close enough to meet the challenge may be a about three days early. (tomorrow looks like his debut) How can a preserve this male for the slower female? Also, is it better to pollinate with a male off the main vine rather than a side vine, or does that matter? I notice the male flowers are much smaller than the ones early this year, does that make a difference also? I'm full of questions, I have a million of them yet, i'm happy for the free advice most of you give. That's why I still hold my offer to create a custom pumpkin pattern for anyone to carve like a master. I can creat a likeness of anyone you want and i'm very good at it. It can be ANYONE..even yourself if you want. Like i've said before, I am not going to get much more than a couple of peas in most of your eyes, but this experience is one I will never forget. I started something I wanted to do since I was a child. I did not know anything about it. My plan was to plant, water, and have a big pumpkin to carve this year. Boy did I underestimate the genius of Giant Pumpkin Growers! This is not a hobby, this is not a sport.....this is an ART! And you are forever painting your canvas until that pumpkin comes off the vine! It is fun for this 45 year old child with ADHD!
I am thankful for those of you who have followed this rookie this year. I have mentioned my disability and problems to you all with my shoulder and all, and even though it has nothing to do with pumpkins, you all are part of a group who can sympathize and understand my connection with growing this plant through adversity, and the adversity I have faced in my life over the last 3+ years. It has taught me not to give up. In doing so, I am confident I am nearing the end of my suffering and I see brighter days ahead because I kept it going....even when I reached the brink...just like my loving "Punky" who has sealed a special place in my heart no matter her final outcome.

It sounds silly, especially coming from a man, but I have tied my emotions to this experience. And for you woman out there who ultimately know what I mean...you know this kind of thought process is the key to your extraordinary memories! Please continue giving advice to this rookie and help him survive the season against all odds.

You could harvest the male and keep it in your fridge. I'm not sure how long the pollen will be effective though. Hopefully someone else can advise.

The best advise so far hoots..sounds logical. That will be my plan unless I here from someone else with a better idea...you rock virginia man. Isn't that gods country there? Just a quick note seeing you're an "educated" man.(edu) I have a suspected meteorite in need for testing, give your school an opportunity for this revelation by giving me a contact. It might surprise you the interest I have in my specimen.

Hey Pumkinator, I used to be an astronomy buff several years ago and did quite a bit of researching how to identify meteorites, so I might be able to help you with that.

Some things to consider:
Does it have a razor thin black coating? Or look like it may
have at one point?
If so, does it have a shine to it?
Are there concave 'dimples' scattered over the surface?
Sometimes very distinct; other times very slight.
Does it feel heavy for its size?
Is it magnetic any? Can be very slight. One way to test for
a weak magnetic field is to tie some string or rap some
tape (not too much) around the specimen and hang from an
immobile object so as to suspend it in the air. Wait for
it to stop moving. Find the strongest magnet you can and
hold it next to the specimen. If it moves towards the
magnet, you have your answer.

Not all meteorites conform to all of the above qualities, but most known meteorites do. Some don't display hardly any of the qualities and are only found to be meteorites through chemical analysis. These kinds of meteors are probably the most common type, but very rarely are they ever confirmed to be meteorites because they strongly resemble earthly rocks, and unless you have plenty of disposable income to get it tested, theres no way to know for certain. Hope this helps.

It tests positive for nickle.....I went through steps already. Strong magnetic properties. But it has a very strange matrix

Cool, sounds like it might be one. I'd be interested in seeing a photo?
