No, in fact they actually have to be connected to it in order to grow. Maybe you can clarify your question. Do you mean the base of the plant? Further out on the vine?

www.aggc.org go to this site and you can see the distances (feet out) of the top grown pumpkins.

Thanks Richard. Yeah I mean base/stump
Any problems with a fruit growing closer than 10 feet?

You can choose to grow a pumpkin that is less than 10' out on the main vine, however the more plant you have behind the fruit, the more roots and photosynthesis you have going on behind the fruit to push it. That's not to say it won't benefit from the portions of the plant past the fruit, however results indicate the optimum is to have the bulk of the plant growing before the pumpkin and not past it. I have a couple this year that are right at that point and one that's at about 8'. Later sets did not take or grow well so I grow what I have. There is no real "problem" growing a fruit closer to the base of the plant, it's just not as desireable.

My pumpkin on one of my plants only about 4 feet from the stem/stump.
It was the first pumpkin and grew really well.
I had some other pumpkins growing much farther out (12 feet plus) but they never set so I have let this one grow since June at 4 feet

You would have done best to pass on that first fruit and set them later, but I think you've bought this one at 4'. Good luck.
