At least one. Sometimes it takes a lot of them.

I try to set at least 3 per plant. More if conditions are favorable and then cull back to 1 or 2. It only takes one if things work out but I hedge my bets with these things. It's better to take them off later than try to add new ones later. The heat is on and all my recent sets appear to be aborting, this means I'll be going with earlier set fruit, but then that's OK, they had a head start even if there is less plant behind them.

most who compete will ONLY pollinate on the plants MAIN VINE. we start polinating at 12 FT down on the main and will pollinate THREE PUMPKINS, possibly four at the most.
withing a COUPLE WEEKS we have culled down to TWO PUMPKINS. our choosen fruit and a backup to hold onto for an additional week or so.

I usually let the bees pollinate and they either set or they don't
Once I got the one fruit I want set and growing I cut off any other pumpkins that show up
