Has anyone ever seen the pumpkins growing so slow as we have this season here in the midwest? 3-4" circumference the norm?
I have not seen this in my 12 years growing. Using our place as an example, the plants are healthy, aging well, green, with good fertility. Yet the pumpkins cant be made to grow. I am not overly concerned about it because things have always evened out in the end.
July has obviously been well below average as far as temperature, daylight hours, even rain.
Is this Mt. Redoubt in Alaska related?

The weather has been very cool for this time of year up here. Maybe August will be warmer.

Same here, Tom. Not worried, but the pumpkins are just barely moving... cold Nights June and July. Today is the hotest this summer at 85 degrees... hope we start growing soon.

Check your soil temps, I had 61° under the folage last week Friday,,,,the soil isn't working yet. That is my average soil temp for the first week of June here in the northwoods normally.

It's been cool here to Tom, but that 1087.5 Barenie keeps moving quickly!! Almost to twenty days and on track for well over my best day 20 number.

The wet cool weather could be volcano related. We had a cold summer in 1992 when Mt Pinatubo blew up in the Phillipines and then record floods the next year. But desipte the poor weather, a couple of my pumpkins are growing better than ever.

Hi Tom! In SE MN, we're fighting upper 40s tonight and possibly the coldest July in 40 years...I've never seen this before...I've blankets BACK on my pumpkins in July...the 10 day forecast calls for mainly low 50s..with a high of 66 on Thursday...with June also being cold except for 1 week...this is really effecting the pumpkins in MN...looks like I'll have to invest in a greenhouse! :-)

g, the only reason i can explain my early success in the worst weather i have had since growing atlantic giants is the cool weather this year. my house is a brown brick and it is right next to the patch. my 6' fence reduces wind coniserably and reflects a lot of heat and sun back to the patch. when the weather man says 70 degrees, hell it feels like 80 and even the leaves near the fence all have signs of leaf burn even this year. also, the patch sits 8' higher than the perimeter streets. this half lot was built up high in the 1920s on the corner. it is basically an 8' tall raised bed on one half. my soil temps increase rapidly from this micro climate. usually my pumpkins grow rapidly at first and mature faster due to the heat similar to pumpkins grown down south and i lose gains after day 30 when most people are picking up. this year has been a different story. and the 1385 makes a difference cuz georgbe j. hit a 40 lb day with his 1385 and is an hour north of here.

I think the genetics of the 1385 comes into play here. I had a 40 and 43lb gain on this pumpkin. I have only hit 30lbs on all my other plants
