I have a fruit that is growing well however there is a split in the pumpkin it hasn't hit the seed cavity but it is there and it bothers me. I'm wondering if the fruit is worth saving. I have other fruits and selection is a personal choice I'm not really sure what to do.

Where is the split? If it's in a rib or the blossom, I would start looking at my other options.
If it's a stem split, it may be worth the gamble. There have been some pretty big pumpkins that developed early stem splits, but still remained sound. My 881 developed a stem split when it was taping about 430. It was able to grow to an estimated weight of 1031 without the split going through to the cavity. Peace, Tom

Why do stems split?

stems split for a lot of reasons. stress caused by a short stem ( a lot of us have that problem ). poor pumpkin position and no tap roots cut in the area of main before and after stem
some will split because they are very wide at the area where the stem is connected to the fruit. the stem cant keep pace with the width of the fruit growth

usually any splits on the pumpkins flesh are a sign of impending doom. once the fruit really trys to grow it will split wide open like yesterdays newspaper.

Thanks guys I've decided to cull the fruit and did so yesterday. The other fruits on the main vine seem to be growing great and soon I will decide which one to cull. Any suggestions as to what I should do all the fruits are in the right positions and are looking great. so many decisions.
