Awhile back the mainvine on a plant of mine was damaged about 6" from the tip. The bottom 1/3 of the vine was cracked through to the center. It was quite weak at the time. It has healed over well, with a big scab over the area((bottom half of the vine). It feels strong and solid there. The vine has grown well since, and is about 6-7' past the scab now. I have two pumpkins that are at day 9 on this plant. One is on the first node of a secondary just before the scabbed mainvine, and the other is on the main just after the scab. The shapes are quite similar. The one on the secondary is 1/2" larger in circumference. The crosses are irrelevant, as I like both. I want to start culling one quite soon, but don't know which one. Has anyone had good success growing a pumpkin, that is set after damage on the mainvine? Should I wait longer to start culling? There is set on day 5 further down the mainvine, that I'm hoping I don't have to resort to.

keep an eye on both, take daily measurements, wait till they get about basketball/beach ball size before deciding. I don't like the idea of having only 2/3 of a vine, so i would lean toward the secondary

I think it's a toss up between a side and 3/4" main measure and keep fastests

Thanks for the comments so far. The mainvine looks normal and is intact after the healed area. Is this still essentially a 2/3 strength mainvine because of the previous damage? Like usually is the case, the mainvine is thicker than the sidevine...if this matters.

Doug..I posted a few weeks ago for the same issue and found out that some very large fruit have been grown on damaged main vines.(1402 Bosworth). If the fruit is growing well then the vine isn't an issue. Good luck..Mark

Good Luck Doug, I took a big chance choosing one too early in the game. Okay so far (barely) but I have no backup.

Thanks for all the replies. I decided to start culling the one on the secondary today. It had an inch larger circ. than the one on the main, but I'm hoping once the secondary pumpkin is culled, the one on the main with gradually pick up the pace. If I'm wrong, at least this isn't brain surgery.
