I had to terminate the second runner near the base, It was the same vine I had infested as before, only this time, they were dangerously close to the stump (1 inch) I found 2 more munching away, and the one close to the stump was a fat sucker. I don't think he penetrated my main vine with the pumpkin but it is too close to tell. I cut the vine about 3/4 inch from the stump and pulled him out as he was headed that direction. Another close call to the end of my first season. It's discouraging and I hope I can stay interested for next year, it's a fun hobby if you can stay ahead of the game instead of fighting from the rear like I am. Two things I could still use advice on. 1.) Any special care on the cut end close to the stump? 2.) Is there another spray I should be useing to keep any future eggs from hatching? I'm useing what a garden center recommended (which grows pumpkins) It is fruit tree spray by Bonide, it contains 11.76% captan (.25% related derivites), 6% malathion and 81% carbarl. This guy is a Giant Pumpkin Competitive grower, did he sabotage me knowing better it's ineffectivness? I get that impression for some reason and if that is the case I will get my money back (and smash his pumpkins! j.k lol)
