I am having some concerns about my 919 plant and it being sterile? The males have rarely developed completely, and when they do, there is no pollen or pistol inside for it to be on anyway. The females so far have developed after pollenation, but stop around 20 - 25 inches. I have a huge plant but no results. It concerns me, as this is my best looking plant.

Anyone out there have issues like this with a plant before?

I would wonder about phosphorous but since I have 2 other plants in the same soil doing okay, it makes me wonder about the sterility of the plant.

Somehow, I think Ned has something to do with this.

Had an 898 Knauss like that a couple of years ago. It produced tons of tennis ball-sized females, none of which took pollination, and only one male, without a pistil.

Hey Rock check out my 2008 diary.Arwen was a great salad plant but male flowers didn't produce for a long time and when they finally developed they were mutant? Every pumpkin I set on the plant from main to sidevine aborted before day 20? Do the one's that you set look odd?deeper than normal ribbing at such a young stage and oddly wrinkled or lumpy skin?

I had a plant last year with what I would call male flowers but no pistal. Females were not right either. There are pictures in my 2008 diary.

Rock, I wouldn't be surprised that something like this will happen to Ned if he ever gets a plant to grow! He's had a tough year with the maggots, deer, bad weather that YOU sent our way! Maybe some viagra or testosterone shots will help. I mean for your 919 not you!

897 Finders a few blocks away, going to town on females and the males are lagging behind. Hasn't bloomed a single male yet, I'd say they're a week out yet.

Rock, I had a plant do that last year, it was a 1363 Werner. It aborted all the females, the ones I pollinated and the ones I let the bees pollinate, probably a couple dozen in total. It was a big healthy plant, produced only a few male blossoms and the few that did grow were as you described with no pollen. Some of the fruits would get to around a 100 lbs before they aborted, all the fruits took on crazy shapes as they grew but the female blossoms looked fine. All the plants around that one were fine and produced pumpkins near or over 1000 lbs. The plant in that spot this year is doing fine. So, I don't believe its a soil issue just bad luck that you happen to get a seed with this trait. I imagine most of your other 919 seeds are fine. I'd say the outlook is grim, but good luck.

Thx Kevin, that is exactly what is going on here. Fine female looking sets, males, when they came would have nothing inside, plant is the biggest and healthiest of all of them, yet nothing growing from the females. The surrounding plants all are doing fine, so I believe it is a dud seed. This is disheartening because with a small patch it leaves me with little options. Oh well.. Gonna enjoy my sons run with his 1177 Haist. It is doing great! 1207 is doing okay also.

Crap that is exactly what is happening with my 1343 Lyons this year. Haven't been using it as a pollinator but the few males I did pull had no pollen. I better check the others when I get home. I hope the plant is not useless.

I have confirmed that my 1343 is sterile with no pollen or male parts inside. Should I just pull the plant now?

My 1507 Jutras is doing this. Males with under developed insides nad no pollen, some just don't open and rot off, pumpkins get pollinated and then grow slow...15-16 inch by day 10...i will give it a shot of miracle grow to see if results can happen...but if not i will keep it a while for some porch pumpkins and not care for plant...it stinks having a small patch...if i could get seeds from the pumpkin would it be wise to plant it next year? My plant is lighter green then the others iin the patch but all soil has been tested and all spots are roughly the same...
