Lows at night in 60's. Tonight predicted low is 55. Plants don't grow well in this kind of weather. Time to throw the towel in again ? Dave

60's? Thats still shorts and T shirt temps. That's a balmy night in Washington even during a heat wave. Pumpkins still grow, they just do it when your not looking. Just be careful in the morning when adjusting vines. I snapped the tip off the main of my 583 this morning and I haven't even gotten a pollination on that vine yet. I had to go with a secondary for my new main and that will mean no main vine fruit for a couple weeks yet. That towel your waving around and threatening to throw looks suspiciously like an empty sandbag to me Dr. G.

It is just as bad up north but I am not growing this year. I still have to complain because I have not been in the pool yet.

lets face it troopers. parts of ny,ct,ri.ma.nh and probably vt have had a real sucky start. the pumpkins are taking forever to grow . they will not grow in the shade and when you have so many cloudy cool days and even cooler nights?, you may as well be growing under a beech tree. in othetr words YOUR SCREWED.
we cant complain in ri cause we had the best of times for many years while others had the crap/ now it looks like it is our turn. the next couple weeks will set the story for the remainer of the season. if summer does decide to stay a while we can recover some.then play it out into hopefully a good indian summer through early october.
who the hell am i kiddin? lol

It was 53° on my front porch at 8:00 this morning and 83° at 8:00 this evening. It got pretty warm today, but that's a typical overnight temp in this region. This is not an uncommon temperature swing here and there's some pretty respectable size pumpkins come from out this way. Pumpkins don't mind that much it seems. Even when it's cloudy they're still getting daylight and photosynthesis continues. You know what's really tough is trying to get a ripe tomato out of the garden before the middle of August. Crops like that, that are really temperature dependant are a pain. But unless you grow your own you'll never get to eat a decent tomato around here. You guys will have pumpkins, and some of them will be monsters. Quit worrying about the things you can't control and go out and pull a few weeds, you'll feel better.

Ya'll move down here, land is cheap. 112f on Thursday. Mid August during July, and I tried to move my vines earlier so I would get to set in mid June when it was cooler. Um, July arrived then. Okay, so get to deal with the early July conditions I had last year. August is here now.
I agree with Tiller, go commune with the weeds, then sit down with an adult beverage of your choice, and take what you get and work with it. IMO it's a little easier to cope with cooler than hotter!
I'd say there's more than a few truckloads of sand here, but. I'm waiting to see what the scales say this fall!
