Big Jess, you have a Japanese Beetle invasion.I am not a pumpkin expert just yet but I would think that they would enjoy fresh young pumpkin leaves. Spray away!!

I am no bug specialist, but they look similar to a Japanese beetle. Last year my yard got bombed by them and they covered everything but my pumpkins plants. This year They came but not in full force.

I use Ortho Max on my plants and it seems to worked pretty good for just about any insect that tries to chew on them. I get a really resilient one here or there that will chew up part of a leaf, but for the most part the ortho works well for protecting the plants.

You can get Ortho max just about anywhere (Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart) in PA, not sure about NY....

I spray the tops and bottoms of leafs along with leaf stems and exposed vine every 7 to 10 days.

You have to spray late in the evening or you will burn your leafs up.

you can buy a premixed bottle, just hook the hose up and spray for $10 or $11.

Any insecticide with Permethrin as the main ingredient will wipe them out. Other plants in and around my garden that I don't spray with it will have Japanese beetles on them sometimes, while the pumpkins, which I do spray with Permethrin, haven't had a single Jap beetle on them the entire season. This is what I use:

Also next spring you might want to consider treating the soil around the whole area with Milky Spore, a bacterial disease that kills Jap beetles in there larval stage. The stuff is a little pricey, but given that it can remain effective for 10-20 years I think it is well worth the investment.

I took a look and what I see is a striped cucumber beetle. I did not see a Japanese beetle..did I miss something. Get rid of them as soon as possible, they spread bacterial wilt and do no good to yur pumpkins.

Looks like BigJess posted two pictures today on his diary, the first being a Japanese Beetle, the second, a Cuc Beetle.

ya, just gave his diary another look and the last four entries weren't there when I first saw it, just that first 7/9 entry with the japanese beetle. Bad timing I guess, lol. But ya that other bug is a cuke beetle. I'm sure anything that takes care of one of them will take care of the other too.

Jess,
The bug in you diary pic is a striped cucumber beetle, Croley is 100% correct, its time to spray and fast.
Do you have talstar? Merit? if not get ortho max or sevin.

Jess.... one thing that you can do for future prevention is to remove all the male flowers from your plant every day. The male flowers draw the cuke beetles big time.
I have found that by removing all the males, I have been able to reduce the cuke beetles by about 90%.

Great Big Jess, sevin will do the job. Its is a good idea to remove the males if youre not pollinateing.
