Here is a pic of a stem split on a 10 day old fruit:

The split is pretty deep,(Not all the way through) it does not appear deep because it is packed with captan.
What are your experiences with stem splits on young fruits?

That split should be just fine. They split all over the place early and heal very well. It is the splits you get after say....30 or 40 days that tend to be more problematic. I actually prefer my stems to split and widen early - i think it helps make them stronger in those areas - along with giving them the ability to expand at a time when the pumpkin is filling in every open split with new flesh.
