My first few side vinse on one side of the plants are at the edge of the patch. For now i have black silt fence up for wind protection.....can i let the vines grow up the fence for now for extra leaves or is best i snip and bury them the next day?
eventually i will need to terminate them but thought i could let them grow another week or 2 for some extra sun absorbance.

How long are they? If 12' that's plenty(will you have more room when that fence is down), termination will push the rest of the plant getting it filled in b4 fruit are set and growing, a very GOOD thing.
We do have a fellow in WI however that is building a reputation for growing "fence pumpkins" ;-)

8' on the short side.....will be about 12-14' on the other side of the main.
i am not sure if the fence will come down and when. the fence is at the grass.....i dont want to run these vines over the grass.

be creative, the secondarys don't have to run straight out to the side if you want length you have options

Great advice Dan. My buddy Steve grows in a smallish area with great results and planned secondary training.
This year on his 904 Northrup, he has trained the first 2 secondaries on each side of the main...to go backwards behind the main.
For him, it opens up another area to let the other secondaries fill up. Like Dan said, you can be creative.

i ended up snipping them at their boundarys, hoping that will encourage the rest of the plant to fill in ever so slightly faster.
will bury the ends in a day or 2.
