How many pumpkins can be supported to full genetic capacity on the main vine? I have heard you can put two on a plant, or would it be better to keep one. I have a Dill 906 that set a fruit before I could pollinate it (open either to itself or the companion) and a second fruit that I crossed with a Companion 1311. I am trying to decide if I should remove one or if the plant can support both. The open fruit is slightly ahead of the crossed fruit so that is what makes me hesitant to remove it. I would also like to keep the crossed fruit because I know I pollinated it with a good cross.

If your not worried about size as much, keep both! if you have a decent sized plant (400sfq ft) you can support two pumpkins with ease.
How many Pumpkins a plant can support to maturity? I would say all depends on the size of the plant, and it's growing environment. There is too many variables to give a number for this.

The seeds from the open pollination will more than likely be useless next year. And it will just slow the growth of the cross.

Remove the open pollinated fruit asap. The fruit closer to the stump will usually slow the one after it. It will pick up after the other is removed. If you leave two on the main you will be lucky to break 400 lbs! Some growers will leave one on a side vine until after the peak, to act as a shock absorber.

Sounds like the OP is coming off tonight! Thanks for the words of encouragement I feel much braver about cutting it off now. Since it has been hot I am going to cut it tonight and completely re-bury the vine.
