My well pumps a five gallon bucket full in 30 second a 10 gallon bucket in 1 minute and 600 gallons in 1 hour. If I use a sprinkler and sprinkle 600 gallons over a 20 x 20 are which is 400 square feet then I have deposited 1 1/2 gallon per square foot. At 231 cubic inches per gallon times 1 1/2 gallon I am delivering 346 cubic inches per square foot per hour. Divide that by 144 square inches and one has 2.4 Cubic inches of surface water per square inch. Is this correct!

Your math is correct as far as ii goes, but you need to know how much water your sprinklers can process in that time as it could be a lower amount than what the well can pump. Wells shut off at a certain pressure and the air in the tank can compensate for loss of water supply untill it drops below a specific pressure. Then the well can turn back on and increase the pressure untill it shuts off again. So if your filling buckets with a hose and not the sprinklers you could have differant amounts.(I think??)

mary is right on in her assesment,,,toss your sprinkler in the bucket and get the rate
then forget the math and figure out how long it takes to get your soil at the right moisture level,,,then keep track and find out how long it holds that moisture. All soils are different,,all situations are different (more wind and sun faster transpiration) many things come into play,,,

Thanks for answering....I must have a pretty good well as I left the hydrant on because I had a hose with shut off noozle. My mistake. Yesterday around five as near as I can figure (I was working in that section of garden till 5) the hose blew. It was on all night long till 6 am this morning. It flooded my 30 x 200 garden and run off filled the duck pond which had an overflow into another duck pond which had an overflow into the pasture. The pasture was standing water and the runoff continued to flow till 12 noon although I had shut off the water at 6 am. Near as I can figure thats 7800 gallons of water. This evening I ran the sprinklers for 2 hours and then apply a compost tea through the hose as well. Well is 220 feet deep and was dug in 2006.

Has anybody checked if the water train leaves Boston at 20mph at 5am and the fertilizer train leaves LA at 50 mph at 2pm (est)in which state shall the twain meet and at what time? And what will the resulting concentration of fertilizer be when they "mix?" ;-)

An easier way to check the rate your sprinklers will flow is to set a rain gauge in the patch. Turn on the sprinklers and run them until you have the desired amount of water in the gauge.

Ditto collecting the output over time. The sprinkler will provide a degree of resistance that the sill cock collection didn't reflect.
Irrigation water is rarely quantified in gallons but rather in inches. 27,000 gallons = 1 inch per acre so 580 gallons per 1000 sq ft = 1 inch.
