Bad storm thursday afternoon and many vines unburried and tipped over on their sides.

What is the correct way to stand up/rebury these vines or should i just leave them the way they are and bury them on there sides? The leaves will adjust themselves and grow towards the sun, right?

Tap roots were about 2-3 inches long.

Stupid me.....if i would have had more plastic coat hangers anchors along the vines every 2-3 feet, that would have helped instead of 1 here and 1 there.

Could have been worse..........

I put a 'corner' every foot to foot and a half, starting on secondaries about 18-24" from the main. And leave them in. Don't get them too tight so vine can grow but enough they can't blow around and get damaged.

Dig a little and put the tap back in, bury it and rebury the vine. And add a few more corners! Use white or very close to it (cream or light tan) so you can see them!

When I am pegging ends of vines, I will put one in when the end past last one is about 18-24" long and one or two nodes behind the tip itself. By doing it as part of daily plant maintenance; it keeps the plant where I want it.

Try close to and arc around on prevalent wind directions, some sort of moveable windbreak. I use feed tubs, either opening down; or if really bad wind, bottom down and put water in them or concrete blocks if they're not waterproof to hold them down.

Do your best at straightening them out to the original pattern Jeremy. I think you will be amazed at the recovery of these plants in a weeks time.

this happened to me last week ,just upright and hold in place with strategically placed Bamboo stakes use the leaf stalks to help stabalize and then rebury vine as best you can? I watered it in after applying fresh dirt over the vines after I finished. This week you would'nt even know they rolled;)
Good Luck

what Bumpkin said. try to get them corrected asap, or else they will try to fix themselves, and the leaf stalks will end up curled. not the biggest problem, just looks horrible and it might be tougher getting your roots the way you want.

ok, vines turned back up and reburied and staked.
yes andy, some of the stalks are curled but nothing i can do about that now.
we must have got some hail here also, i see many small holes in many of the leaves.
still could have been worse...

I agree 100% with Andy ,
Jeremy, if you have any long, thin, type steaks of any kind(I use old hunting arrows),, try to prop your leaves back up with them. I Also check the leaves out good at the base to see if they are cracked from bending over from the wind,,,,, if they are bent and cracked to where water can get in, I usually just cut mine off as close to the vine as I can,,, because later with water laying in the stem it will start them to rot.

This is why I am burying in a trench a few inches deep. The weight of the soil helps prevent this. Last year I had a major problem with this. My 848 MacKenzie plant lost half of its tap roots this way, but still managed 661 pounds.
