I am new to the pumpkin world and I have a question regarding the female flowers. I have noticed that some females have a green gynecium (bulb under the bloom) while others are yellow. Why is this and is there a difference between the 2. I have pollinated some of each but I can't tell if there is a difference in any way besides color. Thanks, Karen

Ok but herein lies the curiosity; I have green and yellow gynecia on the same vine of my Atlantic Giants. I am only growing one pumkin on each vine but 2 of my 4 were green prior to pollination and the other 2 were yellow. They are all growing fine but the ones that started green are a much paler yellow than the ones that were yellow in the first place. I know this is probably no big deal, but I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this.

If the flower was good and well formed, and the pollenation took, you probably have all pumpkins. I think the green versus yellow means there is a squash in the recent parentage of the vine; but unless it's a few generations of 'green squash' most of those crosses come up pumpkin.

You may get that bi color look with some big green areas on an otherwise orange pumpkin.
