I have been thinking...a lot of wood smoke here..lol.. Is it possible ma nature might be doing us a favor? By setting back the pollination date and reducing the chance of internal heat-ergo-rotting from the inside out.. if this fall turns out warm? Have we gone too far in starting to pollinate too early? Hey.. a guy can dream and try to justify a good outcome for a late pollination? What do you folks think? Bill P

Well here's my thery on that subject Bill, it's a good thought, but one would hope that it would mean less splits late in the season like lots of folks seem to have had last year late. Maybe just maybe it will mean stronger walls and maybe thicker with any luck meaning heavier! Now, that said, we gotta feed em just right so they gain enough weight and not loose any time due to weather conditions.

bill id take sooner rather than later on the pollinations providing my plants are the desired size.
when you pollinate late for competition purposes you run the risk of chasing everyone all season and, on top of that? you will need a good to great fall to catch up.
and, if you happen to get a really good pumpkin that wants to grow to pickin? it will never reach its full potential if pollinated late ( 15th of july on out )
just my opinion

Pap-You are probably right. Just trying to justify being behind this year in chilly WNY! Hopefully will be pollinating before then!

I also hope that's right. I don't remember a time I was so far behind. Always seems to be something.

bill how far is bliss from silver creek n.y.? thats where i was born and grew up.
jeremy when you consider the lack of sun and so many rainy days id guess most who have experienced a crappy cool, wet spring to have mains between 9 and 12 ft at this point.
christine be careful once the sun and temps ramp up later this week. could be a lot of leaf flagging until the plants get used to the sun and heat. if you can you may need to mist a few times during the heat of day.
steely once the good temps and sun take over the area you will be surprised at how fast the plants will grow.

Pap Iam about 1.5 hours or so away , to the north west.In southern Wyoming County, not far from Fillmore and Houghton , over in Allegany County. I purchased a puppy years ago from a guy in Silver Creek. One of the best critters I ever owned. She passed two summers ago at age 16.
Pap.. It is getting serious here.. growing wise.. I hope this week's projected heat holds on.. I live on top of a hill in the new "windmill" country. Electric power all around. But the summer has yet to arrive! My plants are taking a long spring-early summer nap.. My soil tested right on..Best soil test ever! I guess it must be all the cool nights.. One thing for sure, by the time snow falls, I will have electric service out to my patch for heat cables and heaters. Enough of trying to cooperate with ma nature, time to fool her..lol B.P

yup, temps around here getting in the 80's this week.
I have noticed some flagging on some leaves on my bigger plants (which sees less sun) then my non flaggin plant.
silvercreek = about an hour drive from me.
