I just want to let everyone know that at least for southern New England I would suggest you set your Squash Vine Borer traps up this week.
I have gotten many questions about them this past off-season and I said I would let everyone know when to put them out.
If you want to see how I mount them check out this link...

If you want to see what them catch look at Bushwacker’s diary picture from last year...

Any other questions post them here.

How do you make a trap, or where do you buy them, I'm curious.

I get mine from Great Lakes IPM as Rick found.. Go to:
http://www.greatlakesipm.com/webcat2009.pdf
Then on page 19 you will see the traps. I also buy and extra lure so I can recharge the trap mid-season. I have caught SVB into August last year. The traps will last many seasons, and all you will have to re-buy are the kill strips and lures which are not very expensive at all.

Question, will the use of the lure attract more unwanted SVB's then normal? Will the use of this SVB makes things worse?
When I used the Jap Beetle trap I actually put out a scent that said come to my house. I'm sure my neighbor was pleased as I invited his beetles to my house. .

If setting traps then you should set them well away from the plants. I used Japanese beetle traps one yr and they must have come for miles to hang out.

I have hear from people that the traps attract the insects to your patch, so I set-up a trap far away from my giant pumpkins, but near some other squash plants this year. Well, one of the traps near my giant pumpkin plants was the 1st to show a SVB. Also, it was about in the middle of the patch (not on the edges).
So, while the traps do attract the insects (which is the goal for monitoring) I think the range of effectiveness of the traps is weaker then the attractive power of the plants themselves.
My thought is every moth in the trap is one less around the plants. Also, by monitoring 24/7 I know when the pressure in my area is high.
