I dont know about any of you guys but this year is starting to be a real pain in the 'blank-ity-blank'. Seems like its the year for weeds, and more weeds, I dont remember them ever being this bad before.
I know you guys with all that non stop rain that once the sun does shine your gonna have weeds popping out everywhere,,,,

Yep know the feeling weeds and rocks, and repeat! LOL. My weeds got into the potato crop really fast, if it weren't for the flowers it would be hard to see them and the corn too. No knee high by fourth of July here I'm afraid, been to cold. But the weeds don't seem to mind. My garden is a mess, and I've been weeding that too.

Tried a couple new things in the gardens this year. Round up. Fabulous stuff. Before the kins were out of the hoops I hit the entire area with round-up. In the garden I put buckets over the peppers and sprayed round up. Looking good so far!
Throughout my other garden around my tomatoes and peppers I bought rolls of painters paper, rolled it out and then covered it with grass clippings. I my new garden I put down woven greenhouse groundcover and planted through it. These practices have saved me hours of weeding this year.

Our pumpkins this year are in the spots that flooded out and went to weeds last year. They must have put out billions of seeds. It rains every 3rd day or so and the patch just turns green. Foxtail, pigweed, marestail and lambsquarter are bad. But we have one called hairy galinsoga that is trying to take over the place. Only good thing about it is the fact that it is easy to pull. I can't wait for the weather to warm up so the pumpkins grow and start to shade out the weeds.

Duane, I do the exact same thing as you, ever since Jerry Rose told me how he uses round up I been doing the same thing ever since. There is a ton of milk weed this year and that weed attracts them big red milk weed beatles. This is the most milk weeds I have ever seen, I'm not sure if its because I never put my field up in hay last year or not(which now it needs brush hog.) My fields are right next to my patches and I'm thinking the wind blew seed from my field into my patches in the fall .
I need to buy that tractor off Dave Stelts, that way I wont have to rely on my neighbor to cut my fields,,, aint that right Dave?,,,lol

Plenty of weeds here! What I do is while I am letting my dogs do their business in the next field, walk through the patch pulling the weeds that catch my eye right away. I repeat this process every morning @ 6:30. I am a mile ahead of the weeds this year compared to last year. I have a cone on the end of my sprayer that I every once in a while place over a weed and spray with round up. The wierd thing is that some of these things just won't die. Those are the ones I really keep chasing this year. Does anyone know why round up is not killing some of these? I have no idea what kind of weed it is, but what ever it is it's tough!

Christine- I put down roundup between the rows by using a friend holding a big piece of cardboard to protect the plants. So far-so good. My pumpkin patch I followed pap's advice and gave the entire patch a good dose while the pumpkins were under the hoops.
After yeaterdays hail storm at my brothers in Albany, I am leaving the hoops up awhile more and keeping the plastic and binder clips handy.. just in case.. Best wishes Bill p

I'd bet you have a lot of Monarch Butterflies Brooks. I wish I had more milkweed, I actually brought some in two years ago but I haven't seem any come up. Milkweed is the where the Monarch Butterfly breed and the Only thing they eat.

I'm growing on all new soil. It was tall grass last year. Let's just say it's tall grass again this year darn it. Round-up apparently isn't nearly as effective on grass as on broad leaf.
If anyone asks I just tell them I'm colonizing myco.

Bill, just took my plastic off completley this week. I tried the round up and it worked but may not have been a strong enough dose for these weeds, looks like it's wild raddishes, there is a root at the end and looks like raddishes. Hmm, must be my cousin fed those cows well, LOL, grass and lord knows what else. But weeds everywhere.
Thankfully we didn't get your hail storm Bill, we missed that one. I do have the plastic still available and the hoop frames are still up just in case of emergencies.
The potato crop really needs help, I've been weeding that once per week by hand, and it's a ton of weeds! I try to hill them as I weed, but it takes time. My garden is a mess, and I always seem to end up in the same boat every Summer cleaning up weeds trying to get ahead of the vine burrying season, then I won't be able to keep ahead of that either, LOL. Name of the game I suppose.

This is weed central, and last year I had to prune tumbleweeds with the lop pruner. This year the stirrup hoe is being worn out and I am doing regular passes to get rid of the rest.
Oklahoma panhandle is a runway for migrating tumbleweeds, they blow into Kansas during the day and make the return trip into Texas at night....! I did roundup early which means I can still see front and back yard and the patch at this time. I call it 'having "weed issues"...'

I have been spending 3 to 4 hours every weekend weeding. I will tell you that it is paying off. I have less weeds this year than I did last, but it is a lot of work.
I must agree with others, if it rains then BAM the weeds appear. The past few weeks I just left the weeds in the patch to decay, but it never seem to take care of them. This week I removed the debris in hopes that I will see less next weekend.

FYI Clomazone & Ethalfluralin will eliminate 99.9% of all weeds in curbit patches

I think the weeds are the best growing thing in my patch. We have had so much rain here, they have given flood warnings. I will have to spray with round up and see if that will help when things dry out a bit.

I applied Preen Weed Preventer early this year and it has saved my butt this year, almost no weeds where I used it.

the vigoro action hoe is a nice tool. just keep the scuffeling away from the root zone, but the rest of the patch, swipe swipe swipe after you let them weed seeds germinate and then chop em down. very nice tool.

Scuffle hoe near the plants. Generic glyphosate everywhere else.
Watch using Preen. Trifluralin prunes roots so not too close to the crown.

Christine get some Straw or Old hay to mulch those potatoes. Mulch, Mulch, Mulch or Hoe, Hoe, Hoe is your only choice for a weed free garden

Cary, glyphosate is roundup. Just don't buy the name brand stuff. You can get it at alot of farm supply shops and nurseries.
