I bury the side vines but not the main vine because if that vine gets rotten then your season is over.

I bury them all...trying to keep them away from the squirrels and get more rooting.
I've ever had a vine rot...so don't worry about that.

On Pap's advise I bury the main and sides until SVB season is over. Then uncover the main for the remainder of the season.

I bury everything, handwatering will uncover the main after the roots are established.

I bury everything... and yeah, some careful watering will wash your main clear later. I do leave the first three feet of main out so I can monitor it and the stump better.

i only bury at the leaf junctions on both the main and the secondaries with most of the dirt being concentrated on the sides and underneath any leaf junction rising off the ground a bit. the initial burying makes sure the tap root taps into the ground without drying out suspended in mid air. usually most of the soil ends up washing off the top of the vines later on as the vines grows thicker and rains and watering washes off the top. any soil that does not wash off the top of the mains will get removed by hand later on when solid tap rooting is secured. this is to keep an eye on all leaf junctions incase rot begins to develop on a older leaf that has cracked at the base that will rot out the main. the leaf sometimes won't fall over until the rot has completely affected the entire circumference of the leaf stalk. by this time, rot has slowly been working the main at this leaf junction. left uncheck buried completely has gotten me before in this situation at least a couple times. later down the road when a pumpkin didn't grow up to its potential and i have uncovered the dirt on the main i have found out why. i just use a hand shovel and dig out a scoop under each leaf junction, throw in some mych and bury the leaf junction. i have also been watering in some of joel's aqua sol mych along all mains and secondaries.
