hey ya dont have to ne good ,sometimes lucky is all it takes.
this season our goal was to have a bigger plant come pollination time.
to that end ? we did start our seeds and our planting dates earlier than previous years by seven days. we are lucky we did.
thank god because the weather in rhode island has been crap for much of the spring.
to much cloudy -cool - some rainy - days. all adding up to diminished plant growth.
we still have that one week advantage in growth due in part to larger greenhouses and the heating cables, so everything is still on target . but in general the spring here has sucked. for these plants to really take off you need those eighty + days, lots of sun, with night time temps in the low seventies.
anyone in our area who got off late will be chasing their tails all year.

Start dates always had me wondering the beginning of the season, because end of June, and first part of July it always seems most everyone is caught up with each other, even if they did start a week or two ahead of time.

Its weird how we always blow the doors off of the Canada growers at the start of the season, like us having a main vine growing 7 or 8 feet and theirs are still in a cold frame with a main vine not even touching the ground yet.But come pollination time they are pollinating same time we are. It amazes me how they always catch up.
