Just wondering how many of my pumpkin growing brothers and sisters fared after the wind and hail storm this evening. Nickel-sized hail for 15 minutes here with 65 mph winds.

The season started out as our best ever, with plants that any heavy-hitter would envy on new ground with ideal weather. Mains had hit the 6-foot mark when something had eaten the growing tips of the mains on three plants. Covered the ends of the mains with fencing and remay. No more damage(birds, I suspect). Things again looking up and one crisis averted. Then this storm.

I had expected the worst when I finally got out to the patch, but found nothing more than some fencing down and some dropped leaves with holes in them. I can't help but think the first crisis helped to dampen the effects of this storm since the vine ends were covered. Everything happens for a reason I suppose, and this was just one of those lows in a typical Ohio up-and-down season. Damn, I love this hobby.

How did everyone else fare?

Had some heavy wind with flood warnings. The rain came down fast and hard. Went to look when it was over, all looked good, the hoops were still in place.

day um, sorry to hear that Joe, seems like every year you cant catch a break , I know your in the wide open flat area of Ohio, and when you get hit by a storm you really get hit hard.
If you was hit by the storm yesterday evening then its real possible it hit at my place last night when I was in bed, I heard a little thunder last night and that was it,and I haven't went outside to check and see if it hit here and what the damage might be.. I only have 3 plants left in hoops, the rest of my plants I been taking down one at a time as they out grow them,,, so if I did get the same storm you did then I might have some damaged plants(I'm praying I dont), kinda afraid to look this morning before I go to work.

I've become quite jaded about the weather around here Brooks. That's why I put out so many plants. I count on a 50% attrition rate.....lol

Checked this morning before I went to work, and plants are OK, the storm ether slacked off a bunch before it hit here or it just missed me. I didn't get the hail or strong winds here, just a bunch of rain and lightning. U

usually the storm you guys get there in Circleville will follow 2 hrs down (or is it up?) I-70 right over me.
