do ants do damage to the root system at the base of pumpkin plants? they must be taking up shop in and around the heating cables where it is warm. is there a quick remedy? thanks for any input.

Find another colony dig them up and put them where you want to get rid of the colony that is bugging you. They will kill each other. Ants aren't really as much of a problem as the aphids they keep in there colony.
You can also use ant traps, bait etc.

Twice I have lost plants to some kind of yellow colored ants. The eat the roots off completely.
