It stays warmer in Ca longer than up north, you can probably wait longer, might not be done by the october weigh offs, I would consult local california growers.

We started one last year on May 28 and ended up with a 835.8 pounder. The thing about it though was that it was still doing close to 20 pounds a day when we got hit by a wind storm (Hurrican Ike) here in Ohio and it stopped. We weighed it 21 days later and it only gained about 40 more pounds after the storm.
