I have obtained a few seeds from the 1357 Ghaye. I am growing one in my patch now and have a few spare seeds for the future. My spare seeds have a huge crack in them and you can see right in the seeds. Can I do anything to keep the seed from drying out so I can use it next season if I want. Any ideas?

Sealing wax would probably help though I've never heard of anyone doing this. I'd store that seed in the freezer regardless.

This is irritating. Because of the Flat Vine. If it has just read in the diary. Sorry Matt

Matt, just put a clear piece of tape over the crack and seal it good to help keep the air out. Not a big deal or a problem really,
I have germinated some 5 to 6 year old seeds that was split like his 1357 before, just keep em in a cool dry place and I bet you get that seed to germinate in 4 or 5 years, or even more.

Most of my 1357 seeds are cracked. Here's pic.: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=100666 Since a couple of years i blow up the seeds instead of the fruits, lol.

I had one 1357 not germ, but it 'swelled' and one did just fine. The second one that crack didn't affect the cots at all and it is growing happily in my patch, big and sassy.

Thanks for the advice I will keep them cool and I like Brooks idea of tape I did it and it looks great. I am going to keep the flat vine and if it dont split into two vines soon I will train out a secondary to be the main and prune back the bad section. It is to late to transplant now plus I would disturb the root system of my other plants.

If filing the edges is to allow moisture in (as well as allowing the seed coat to release easier), and the seed has a crack (which would allow more moisture in)...is there a happy medium in the finling technique?? Peace, Wayne

I filed the 1357's and it made popping off the seedcase a snap to get the cots out, Wayne. No fingernail surgery, just start at the crack and pop a piece off, then the rest comes right off. When I soaked I did put the crack side up to float.

if the crack is bad id be tempted to do 1 of 2 things 1. throw it out ( depending on its value to me ) 2. cover the crack with a small piece of cuck rape to help hold in the moisture. pap
