Hi
How did the WNY growers make out after last weekend's storm? I hope the rest of WNY growers survived the horrendous basts. I live on top of a hill and mother nature was out on a howling binge!I managed to save all hoophouses but one. I lost my seed ( plant) from Thad Starr.

PS- Thad- do you have an extra from your big one? Mine was destroyed by 60 plus mph winds.

Bill, My hoop houses were just in the dirt on Friday when Saturday's winds came up. When I got home they were still in the patch but flapping in the breeze. I had to re-anchor everything down a bit more. I don't have my plants in the dirt yet, and it's probably a good thing as two of them probably would have been destroyed due to the winds. Lessons learned, anchor down for 60mph + winds. What a day.

Also a good reason to have backups ready for anything. The only thing I lost was a barn door that needed repairs anyway.

We recieved wind gusts up to 90km/hr from the North last night. My wind fence blew down and a couple of posts snapped off. It's a good thing the frames were anchored securely. The next few nights are calling for -1deg c. OH MY NERVES.lol

We had frost advisory last night and tonight, and we did have frost over night. Not putting my plants in the dirt til probably Thursday.

Mine survived everything it looks.

Hoops still up. Good thing i pounded rebar into the ground and slid the uprights over the rebar or it would have blown away.
Next year, i pound rebar farther into ground.
Frost advisory last night, so i put buckets over the small plants inside the hoops for some extra protection.
Layed some black plastic around the plants in the hoops today. Weeds galore already in them. Must be from heating the soil for the last 3 weeks.
Plants all look ok so far, nothing serious to worry about.

My work schedule stinks for growing pumpkins. I leave for work at 1pm and dont get home til almost midnight, so i have my neighbors close the hoops in the evenings.

Then i have to wake up early to open them about 8am. then back to bed for 2 hours.

I had frost this morning, all plants were under boxes or buckets. Now planning for 30 MPH winds tomorrow. At least the deep valley that makes the cold air settle in my patch will break a lot of the wind.

Bill I do not know what you are used to but here in WI I like my plants to take some wind to be able to withstand the strong thunderstorms they are gauranteed to encounter in June, July and August. I like to let the take some 20 to 30 mile/per/hour winds to toughen them up without destroying them. however when they are little 60 mph is too much but letting them experiance some wind can be good. In case you were wonder about that.
