I heard that some of you guys just weed in the beginning of the season before you till, but leave the patch go the rest of the year. What's the reason behind this? Is this heresy really the right way to do it?

I till before the plants go in the patch but not after. I occasionally use Round-Up ahead of the vines to help keep the weeds down but I hand pull all other weeds. These plants have such an extensive root system that any tilling or deep weeding with a garden hoe will damage the plant roots.

Ok, so weeding damages the root system. What if you can manage to chop off the tops of the weeds? would that help at all?

If you get the weeds when they're SMALL they don't bother.
An application of Roundup a few days before you plant (and NOT in the hoops) helps keep things down in the early part of the year. Then get the stirrup hoe out and keep ahead of it. Once the vine is shading things, you don't have much weed problems where the vine is, just a sort of perimeter...
