Interested in thoughts on whether or not a double vine pumpkin passes down this trait in its offspring. Has any growers corrected their double vine, used its pollen and grew that seed later on? Looking for some observations here pleaZe....

Thankz

Wouldn't a double vine be good more roots and leaves to take in energy. Has anyone just let a doublevine continue and set a pumpkin on it?

It could be half as much if it needs to share.....

I think it is a genetic trait. Personally if I get one that is doing strange things right after germinating, I replace it with something that appears to be normal.

wiz, i have had several double vines over the past 2 years, and I'm convinced (even though I have zero scientific proof, lol) that they were all due to cold soil temps in the spring, something I am trying to fix this season. If you want a data point to test, I would look at the progengy of my 1004 Mohr (772 Poirier x 1317.5 Rose) that are grown this year. Both my 772 and my 1317.5 from last year were both double vines, and pollinated with each other. I straightened out both within 3-4 feet of the stump last year.

Pete, I will be testing your theory with your 1004. Also my 689 from 2006. That one was nearly killed by a late spring frost and went double vine. Then the vine split crosswise twice as at laied down. A friend grew the 689 and had no double vine trouble, so maybe it is the cold that causes it.

I had a plant in 2007 that was a double vine. I saved the seeds and handed them out. Almost all of the progeny I heard of, including my own, had a double vine.

I do have a 846 X 1370 cross that is doing quite well, since patche space is so valuable, Im wondering if I toss the 846. I hate to do so...Ill try and straighten it out....But wish I had more info to go on.......Any others with thoughts and experiences on this???
