Plants are up and out of shell, problem with one of the 985 Werners I have is only one cot came out. Any one ever have a problem or story about just one cot coming out of pumpkin shell and having a good plant? The healthy cot looks great, just curious. I would think it wouldnt be much to worry about, but looking for story of good and bad on this issue.

I have a 1021.5 faskell that came up with only one cot, It did'nt look as pretty as the others but the first true leaf came out and it looks fine, as far as how it will do in the long run I dont know, I'M going to watch this post closely because I do have back up's but I think that, faskell plant will do fine, I'm going to post some more pictures of the one cot plant in my diary soon, you will see that the first and second leaves look fine. God bless and grow them big.

It shouldn't hurt much of anything in the long run, but it might take a little longer starting out because a seedling's cots are basically its only source of energy until true leaves come in.

The 995* plant we grew last year only had one cot and grew 1132*. Never slowed it down. We had three plants to choose from and went with the one cot plant as it was a stronger plant overall.

I had it happen once before that I can remember. Slowed it down for the first week or so, but once the true leaves came out, it was fine.

this year we have a seedling with three cots? we could mail you one?
if the seed in question was a backup seedling i would not choose it. BUT, its a 985 with great backgroundand history.as long as the first true leaf developes? i would go for it.
ps-drop by if you get down to ri visiting family in the future.

Odd....My 985 has one good cot and the other barely hanging on....interesting......I hear that CoJoe purposely pulls off one cot on his young ones....

Thanks for the adivce all, I am gonna let it go for now, but there is no true leaf coming yet, so I will wait. Pap, you have it right, hate to see a 985 go by without giving it full shot, so it has now become my backup. I am contemplating starting a 1689 Jutras to go in the spot. Still plenty of time to start one now and be in the race.

Oh yeah, if I do get up RI way, I would never miss the trip to the Pumpkin shed. I just hope you have better weather for me next time! Remember Pap, the year I stopped was the 1502 year! I remember sitting in your shed, sharing a beer with you and reviewing some numbers (2nd week in August with you) of your plants that were unbelievable! In reading Backyard Giants by Susan Warren, I felt like I was a part of that journey that year having stopped in that year. Keep up the great work and always keep that beer cold!

1 cot just makes you feel bad. The plant seems to take off just fine. Had a 275 Holmes last year that lost a cot during seedcase surgery; it went on to produce just fine.
