Who else thinks we might get a new record this year? With all of the 1600's and other great crosses being planted, we're bound to get some monsters.

milford, CT,

Genetics are there......Big factor is always weather...If we have a good July -August weather(Moderate rain...Mid 80"s temps) it could be an exciting year. Mark

The trend line would indicate that a new world record should happen this year (weather permitting). 2008 really wasn't an off year. 2007 was such an extraordinary year that it was off the charts. I expect one, maybe two pumpkins to go over 1689.

I'm with Arvadaboy on this .The weather is a big factor too. Like Ron Wallace said " If we can get a pumpkin est. at 1800 and it goes 12% heavy then then we break 1 ton. But I don't think it will happen this year. But I do think there will be a new WR this year.... time will tell.

WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR

So. Maine

AL Gore said every year the chances of growing a 2000 pound pumpkin get better and better .

Last year was super rainy around hee and the farmers had a very good crop. About 5 years ago we had a very dry year and the crop yields surprised everyone. I think the increased carbon dioxide content of the air is a big factor. More CO2 in the air means better photosynthesis, more sugars produced, bigger crop yields and bigger fruits. It also makes plants more resistant to stresses such as drought or too much rain. Maybe Al Gore knows what he is talking about. Well maybe not everything but he might be right in this case.

I think that it is semi-seriously possible!!! LOL Weather will play a big role (as always). Seems like lots of folks are seriously devoted to the 1 Ton idea!!! Hope it happens!!! Except that, if that happens you have to have an 1800#er to get a real nice jacket!!! LOL Peace, Wayne

1689 might go down this year. if so it will be grown in southern new england soil, " and it would be great if i was the guy to do it " LOL

Pap, you are cordially invited to bring something orange to the Cimarron County Free Fair, Tuesday, Sept 8th by Noon; for our weighoff. We'll at least rustle ya a ski cap or something. Just head West and look for Highway 64 about Kansas...

:D I think the 2001# Rebel is a possibility, of course my plants are barely in the ground and not running yet. The genes are there...

Nah, I expect a 201 Benner :D

My hubby's been looking over my shoulder, over the patch fence and going... you truely are serious this year. ...

I think he measured me for the jacket that has arms that tie in the back. Hehe. I think though, the 1689 may fall this year a few times over.

hey you

Greencastle, PA

Out of 15 posts, nobody mentioned Quinn Werner. Sometimes, people here confuse me. Quinn was one of the guys who made 2007 such a special year. Last year, he joined Joe Jutras and Thad Starr as one of the only growers to grow a 1500lber in consecutive seasons and won the grower of the year award in respect of all of the other monsters that he grew that year.

Come on, everybody. Pennsylvania is where the monsters are grown. The 451 Ford, 1131 G. Checkon, and 1469 L. Checkon were all world records and they were all grown in PA. Some other notable PA pumpkins are the 1556 Werner, 1537 and 1527 Stelts, 1521 Werner, 1190 dmg. L. Checkon, 1446 Werner (the one that made the 998 Pukos famous), 1354 L. Checkon, and the 898 Knauss.

If you are growing giant pumpkins today, you are probably planting something with 898 Knauss in it. So, the roots of the top genetics are from PA. The 1142 VanKooten, 664 Liggett, and 783 Daletas are the only seeds that I can think of off the top of my head that have no 898 genes and grew a 1300lber. Also, the 783 Daletas is the only other seed without any 935 Lloyd genes besides the 500 Beauchemin (75% 898 Knauss genes) to grow over 1300lbs.

The record might be weighed in Ohio, but it will be grown in Pennsylvania.

hey you

I thought of one more... the 227 Leland has no 898 in it. I can't wait to see what happens when some 898 genes get mixed up with that one. (723x1370)x898 looks a lot like the 985 Werner (1370x898)

Good point, Hey you, I might have to name one of my pumpkins after it, Penn, Pennsylvania, Harrisburg.

Owensboro, Ky.

hey you!!! Didnt realize we were naming names!!! LOL Just that the thought of a NWR was the topic!!! That being said (and no offense meant)...I think that several new ammendments, (endo, humic, kelp (and other meals), tea's (several varieties) etc.), that the HH's have used for several years are coming into the norm now...increasing the possibilities for a monster from a much wider range of growers, certainly increases the possibility of a NWR!!! Peace, Wayne
