It used to be talent got you the record contract; over about the last decade, if you didn't have looks, forget it. I heard a country singer say recently, forget the talent, you gotta have the right look...

Big thing is the talent isn't always packaged 'right'. I'd say that 20 years ago she wouldn't have been such a 'surprise' to the audiences out there. Sigh.
