Mister Leon

Pittsburgh

I just constructed my hoop houses for this year and was wondering at what outside temperature should I open them up so I don't kill my plants?

There is no magic bullet answer for this one. For example, yesterday here was overcast and raining off and on but the hoophouse still got up near 100 degrees. On a day over the weekend, it was 50 degrees outside and 85 inside the hoop.

I open the vents during the day no matter what the temperatures or conditions to avoid any issues or disappointments.

I agree with Glenn, open them in the morning if your not going to be around during the day just to be safe. You would be surprised how hot a closed hoop house will get on a partly cloudy/sunny day.

Mr. Leon...the outside temp isnt why you should or should not open up the hoop house!!!! Put a cheap thermometer inside the hoop, and open it when it get's too hot (this is another point of discussion)!! Cool temps w/ direct sun, can raise temps inside of hoop a LOT!!! Cloudy, with high temps can raise temps inside of hoop a LOT!!! Go buy a temp thingy for inside yer hoopdie!!! Peace, Wayne

Get up, shower, grab a cup of joe, open the hoop house, go to work.

Never had a disappointment when I followed this system.

The hoops are for keeping the plants from freezing at night and to provide wind protection when they are small, go with the flow open the vents/doors first thing in the morning...

Yeah, its sun not outside temp so much that matters (though it does matter some). Also, the amount of breeze make a difference too.
