So, I have to tell this, due to the comedic value.
At the beginning of last year, I gave seeds to a friend who wanted to “grow one”. He has a lot more land than I have, and full sun too, and access to horse manure anytime he wants. I tell him the basics, that I know, and pointed him in the direction of bigpumpkins.com, he has an internet connection, so he could easily have looked up any info he needed, or just asked.
I had not much contact with him last year, and he did not mention how his season went all winter, and I did not think to contact him until today.
I always get really into things again in the spring, part of the excitement, and I called him up and asked if he was going to plant seeds from last years, or if he wanted a couple new ones, as I have acquired a lot over the winter, and I know that some will never see dirt.
Me: Hi Sam (not his real name), you want a couple new seeds this year, or you going to plant ones from last year?
Sam: No thanks, I’m never planting seeds from you again, yours were pieces of ****. I got some Dill’s Atlantic Giant seeds from grocery store instead.
Me: What happened? Did they not germinate? Maybe they got eaten by insects...(he interrupts me)
Sam: No damnit! Every singe time I tried to roll one it snapped off the vine!
Me: You rolled them?
Sam: Yeah, my Aunt said if I want them to stay round and not get flat I got to roll them for a little while each day, they all broke off. Your seeds have weak vines.

I hope you said "good luck with your piece of s*** grocery store seeds". You think he would have asked for advice after snapping off the first one. If at first you don't succeed...do the exact same thing next time.

I love it meathead, ungrateful bastard, lol. I'd drive by his house at the end of the season with your largest slunger in the back of a pickup and honk your horn.

Careful what you ask for! Great story. For the less than serious that ask me for seeds, they get some store bought Big Maxx.

He actualy is a decent guy, he is crass on the social end, and there if you need him to help out with something. On the other hand, I just can't leave him to his own devices.
Just as well he broke them off, next thing he will be giving his generic AG’s a milk IV.
I did not give him any more seeds, just would not be right, as Mine get weak stems after all. ;p
Can lead a horse to water, but you can’t always drown him.

Im always surprised when someone asks me if I roll my pumpkins...and give them milk. I used to take the time to tell them why I dont do that, now I say, sure do.

meathead, funny story...lol! I have given seeds to buddies at work before and they would tell me my seeds didnt grow them squat... But what they dont tell you is they are trying to grow the seeds on concrete type soil that wouldnt grow even a weed...lol!!! , they automatically think its the seeds fault even though they plant it in shade with no watering or care. they expect it to grow them a 500 lber by magic or something...lol

This is off the subject, but I am curious, has anyone ever tried growing one on a pallet with lots of sand under it for drainage?

I gave seed to some colleagues with a bunch of instructions and a huge reminder that you can't just leave these plants to the bees. Needless to say, no pumpkins on their plants - I don't think people realize the amount of time put into growing giants. As for your friend, one of my favourite quotes from Albert Einstein comes to mind... "The definition of insantiy is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

I tell them I don't waste milk on the pumpkin, I drink it to be healthy enough to weed and take care of the plant. :) If you roll them to keep them round here, they'll blow away, so of course you leave them to get that flatspot... ooh. Just how you explain it.
