1. How deep does everyone go?
2. Do you think the deeper you go the better you are from a protection from the wind point of view
3. Do you think the deeper you go the more likely it will be that vine rot will be an issue?

Hey Jordan, once I've got the secondaries trained where I want them to go, I pre-dig trenches to allow the vines to settle in and then cover with soil.
1) about 3-4" deep. 2) once they start to root, never had wind issues 3) I've never had my buried vines rot....lucky I guess.

I will be burrying mine deep, I do all my watering with buckets, by hand, last year it did'nt take much for mine to come uncovered.

I just put 6" on top of vine (no burrying) this way after a while from watering vine becomes exposed again after good rooting thus no rot or wind damage. but here I don't have vine borers so a little safer here to do

a good rule to follow is to go back at some point a couple weeks after pollination, ( and vine borer season )uncovering the main and the first couple ft of side vines.
at that time the roots are already anchoring the plant and by exposing the main and first few ft of side vines you can inspect daily for possible problems.

I bury mine about 2" deep just enough to have the vine below the surface, I mound them up a bit and leave them. I don't bury my main and I've never had my sides rot off.
I have a very windy yard and garden and it's amazing the difference it makes after there buried.

I cover and keep them a ground level. Less chance of rotting. I do the same as Pap and uncover when it is safe.
