Jerry, what were the measurements of the 1317.5?
Was just looking through pictures of big pumpkins in the photo album on the bigpumpkins.com, and that largest one with Both great color as well as classic shape that I could find any photo of is still your 1317 from 2007.
How large were her measurements? From what I gather she was to chart, and was very thick and sturdy throughout, with no dill rings or internal cracks. (correct me if I’m wrong on that)
This year I will be planting one of its decendants, the 879 Zoellner (1317.5 x 1290 Poirier), from what I understand the 879 plant, all of its females already had the globe shape of the 1317 right from the start. I hope the shape is carried by the female side.

Ohh, also forgot to ask, did the 1317 get a Howard Dill Award?

Ohh well, guess the aesthetic thing is subjective. In my book your 1317.5 is still the best looking over 1300 that I know of, Perfect classic shape and color looked red/orange in every photo.
That might be a reason I'm putting in its direct decendant this year. That 998 pukos gave it some salmon in the 879, but I think the 1290 Poirier being the pollinator should give it back the 1317 color.
I will self the 879 this year, so if it turns out nice I will have a batch of seeds for "good lookers" for years to come.

I think Pap has a theory on the redish orange color tending to come from the male side, so if orange is the desired goal, then seeds with the best chance of orange would be from those that got pollinated with dark orange.
Not sure if it is always the male side, but the 1317 was crossed with the 998 Pukos (correct me if I'm wrong Jerry), and the 879 (which I am planting) was not as red as the 1317 was. The seeds of the 879 would however have a good shot at having orange again, as the 1317 is close up in its gene pool, and it was pollinated with an 1290 Poirier (same plant that grew the 949 Zoellner).
