Sorta think that the Schroeder (2004) Squash record would not make today's standards for squash. Total true green, I think, it was not. Rules have changed over the years!!! Peace, Wayne

1028 wasn't a squash

LI, it was ruled a squash when it was weighed in 2004...rules have changed since then!!! Back then, I think the rule was if over 50 or 60% green, it was a squash....I prefer the new True Green version of the rule, but as in this example...what happens to the old records, that don't make the new rules??? Peace, Wayne

Well.....the sogpg has thier own rules and has recently been a bit behind the curve when it comes to this topic...they still go by the old rule as far as I know. As far as I know and most agree a "squash" is green or "squash colored" from the beginning to the end....Chillicothe has a history of late season changers being crowned squash (schroeder, Christen, etc). The general population crowned the first "true green" in 2004 after a years worth of promotion and such (and GPC soon followed)so it should have been no surprise in 2006 when Chillocothe was still judging pumpkins to be squash (Christin)in 2006. Now its Chillicothe and it's thier show and their rules and they can do whatever they want but to declare a contrary to popular opinion classification fruit as a state record seems kinda silly to me.(but thats just me..and I thought it was a GPC site anyway?). The 1028.5 was a fine fruit but it is as accepted as a squash about as much as the 1367Rose is accepted as the WR squash.....

Here's what you should do Wayne......Nancy is the wieghoff there right? Declare the Ky squash record "open" to claim. The Squash guys of the un-official "Green Growers" and proud supporters of the Squash Trophy and Green Jacket will supply your home wieghoff with a nice shiney first place trophy for the HEAVIEST TRUE-GREEN SQUASH wieghed at your wieghoff in the fall of 2009 (this season). The trophy will read "First place Squash 2009" Bear Wallow, Ky (or whatever along those lines....let them all talk smack, sandbag, etc....but let the best green squash win and take home the trophy. I'm pretty sure you'll end up with a true green squash state record if you do that!!! Officially wieghed, GPC sanctioned....
If this sounds good to you, please forward the contact info for your wieghoff Co-ordinator for his/her approval....don't wanna step on any toes ya know.... let me know.

ps...I'm interested in hearing from any other green growers or supporters who have wieghoffs w/o squash recognition who would be interested in a similar setup....no catagory...no "prize"...no trophy, etc...its all about getting the accomplishment recognized and getting the squash to the wieghoffs !!!
