Would adding shredded paper to the patch cause any damage to the biology of the soil? It seems as though it would degrade rather quickly.

I take all i can get from work . I then mix it with cow and horse manure , a little compost accelerater, and make sure it is good and wet. I never place in the patch until it is fully composted. It sure didn't harm my patch last season.

paper composts fine, you may want to keep an eye on pH though. High-cellulose compost material can raise pH, it can later be adjusted w/ lime or ash.
