A number of things can cause a split. Dill rings (which seem to be a kind of genetic flaw), to much water or fertilizer causing growth that is faster than the skin of the pumpkin can keep up with, hardened skin from to much sun, kids climbing on the pumpkin, and rotting can all cause splits. Pumpkins can split at pretty much any size.

Think of them as stress flaw fractures... she couldn't take any more and she popped at the flaw... usually a sudden surge of water (lots of rain, neighbor pumped their entire swimming pool contents over or (sneakier) under the fence, etc) causes it to give. Too much fluctuation in temperature can do it too. (cold to warm usually)
