If you soil is alkaline then cotten seed meal can be a great choice.

Good idea Ron! I hadn't thought of it. But Blood meal in the large quantities that I'm looking for - is no longer easily found.
But Alfalfa pellets that my horses/goats eat? Less than $10 per fifty pounds! And with the high protien content it would be a very viable and 'unsmelly' source of N for soil microbes to break down into Nitrate for plant uptake.
BTW - what is your recommendations on application rate?
