Whats your secret recipe for your seed starting mix that you like to use?

I mix Vermiculite and Perlite with miracle grow seed starting mix, I also cook my seed starting mix in the microwave to kill any disease that might be in the mix.(if you cook it to long and you will stink your house up,,lol)

Whats your secret recipe?

I'm with John on the Promix,,,use what the people that make a living starting plants use. Hard to beat the research and controlled production of these products. Available at most greenhouse facilities in my area.

(geeze Brooks, Miracle grow?)

Brooks.....don't know if this is true or not, but a couple years ago I used Miracle Grow starting mix, and someone said there was something in it that would kill the mycorrhizae. I can't remember who, but at the time, thought he was a reliable source. Maybe someone can chime in with the truth.

andy W, curious...and maybe not a factor...why buy a semi-high dollar sterilized starting mix (promix bx) and then add some non sterilized substances into it? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of using the sterilized starting mix? Ya never know where them worms have been!!! LOL Peace, Wayne

I get a 12 pack, head out back, by the time I'm done with my 12 pack I find a area that looks like good black dirt, then I just fill my container. (not really) promix.

Me, I go two parts peat moss, one part vermiculite and a little Myke. Over 90% germ rate although I don't plant as much as most of you. I'll probably stick with what works for me.

BM1, a soilless commercial nursery potting mix, it's about 70% peat moss... I get it by the huge compressed bale(bagged).

I just did some test plantings with Fox Farm's Light Warrior soiless mix and compared it with Jiffy Mix. The Light Warrior was by far the better planting mix. Light Warrior contains mycorrhizae fungi, sphagnum peat moss, horticultural perlite, earthworm castings, granite dust, humic acid, and oyster shell (for pH adjustment). It is much lighter than the Jiffy mix and water moves more easily through it. The Light Warrior plants are literally double the size of the Jiffy Mix plants. Most of the local garden centers have Fox Farm products but I'm not sure how big of a national presence they have.

I think a few people have checked to see if the fertilizer in the Miracle Grow planting mix had any effect on mycorrhizae. They found that it had no effect on its growth. I believe phosphorus limits the growth of mycorrhizae, but apparently there's not enough in the Miracle Grow mix to cause any harm.

I do not have all the US ingrediants so I use coco fibre. I take 50/50 coco fibre and good old worm castings this go halfway in my large plastic bag than 100% coco fibre to fill it up. A little bit of my hydrophinic furtilyzer and fish emalsion, The coco fibre take too much water so you had to leave it after watering for 3 days before planting. Do not water till pumpkin apear. After 5 days it will become potbound so you had to plant it out after 5 days. Work for me no come backs.
