I too need to bust up the hard pan in my clay patch. I have a tractor and will find a subsoiler (rent/buy) my question is the patch is pretty wet this spring (as usual) will I cause more harm than good running the full sized 4x4 tractor over the patch?

Thanks in advance,

It's early yet,,let it dry for a couple weeks and see.

Mine still is under snow and I plan to subsoil.

You can sour your soil by doing it to early - I know its been a long winter but resist the temptation.

I read an article a while back about subsoiling from a noted university study, that suggested that subsoiling should only be done when the soil was dry, like in August or early september. The reason is you want to shatter the subsoil. If it is wet, it will just smear, making the problem worse. That being said I subsoil in the fall when the pumpkins come out in late October.

I would avoid spring

I agree when we V Rip the fields for grain crops we do it in the fall for that very reason. and plue you have all winter for the soil to settle again or as we farmers say for it to "melt".

soil should be real dry so it can fracture and do some good.if it's wet or even alittle to wet it will just slot and cause real problems because it won't heal together right. Also you should go just below compacted layer or just at subsoil layer. Lastly, a good rule of thumb is 45 to 50 horse per leg with a 2.5 inch wide point and you still have to have the weight and traction to go with the H.P. I hope this helps. (another farmer)
