I know I saw somebody making reference to this recently but I just can't find the post. I figure using the 4-wheeler would be a lot easier than finding a big tractor. Thanks, Jim.

I have a single shank subsoiler and there is no way a four wheeler will pull it. I have a 35 horsepower tractor and when you sink the subsoiler in the ground too deep it will make the wheels spin and stop the tractor.

Never say never,,,,It will work with a four wheeler, only thing is that you cant run the sub soiler straight up and down like you can with it behind a tractor, you have to run the sun soiler at a angle, but it will work, you just cant go as deep.

Oh, I have a 550 Honda 4x4 four wheeler, so that roughly 50 horse or better?

I bet Jerry Rose's 3/4 ton Chevy diesel would do it, haha. How many ft/lbs torque Jerry?

I'm working on a way to do this with a Tryo-Bilt Horse tiller. I have a couple of ideas on how to do this.

Amigatec, sounds like a great idea, let me know what you come up with, I think that will work good also.

I have a Hiller/Furrower for the back of it, and last year I took the tines and holders off mounted the Hiller, and used it to dig my potatoes. It worked fairly well but the angle was wrong. I have a second Hiller I plan to modify to do the same thing. I plan to be able to dig at least 10" deep and I may add a sharp shank and try to go deeper. I also have a cultivator pats laying around.

your not gonna do it with a 4 wheeler a sub soiler is just that get below the soil and break the hard pan.i have a 65 horse 4x4 tractor that weighs 7000 lbs and can bury my single shank sub soiler deep enough to stop it maybe i'm going deeper than need be but you still need to go atleast 14 to 18 inches and your not gonna do that with a 4 wheeler or troy built maybe sand but not clay and if you have sand you don't have to worry as much about subsoil anyways.Jerry

you may could but it would take alot of pass' going progressivly deeper each time. As a factory trained Honda (and the other 3 Jap.) tech I would not count on the transmission being very happy about it especially if it is a model with a centrifiul clutch.
Brooks the Rubicon is a great ATV but it only puts down about 14hp max on a chassis dyno. Love them though 2 people on the front rack 2 on the back and wheelies on the balance point through all 5 speeds. Good fun.
This if of course just my 2 pennys though.

Right on, Jerry! Seems that many folk on this site have no idea the resistance that a subsoiler can generate. I love to retell the story of my farming neighbor who came over with his BIG 100+ hp John Deere with which he pulled a 4-pronged subsoiler to about a depth of 24-26". It was back in 2002 when I had a lot of clay that he offered to "rip things up" for me. Well....he had a flying start at my ground when he dropped that subsoiler.... he then came to a sudden halt in about 15 feet!! "What the H#ll?" Were the words out of his mouth as his tires were spinning. He ended up using a much lower gear to finish the job at a shallower depth. When one has a clay-like hard pan, the soil just "howls" as it is being torn up.

Yea, mines not going even going close to 14 inches, maybe 6 to 9 inches , but Im telling you guys I do it!!,,lol, and have done it!! no need to bull sh%$ YOU,,LOL Im not saying I dont have the soil losend up first before I run mine through, but Im telling you I can do it with mine,,, who wants to put a 998 Pukos up I cant run a sub soil with my four wheeler?,, put the seed up and Ill tape it!,,lol,

Stan, Im talking of a single prong sub soil , not 4 prong,,,,and I do have a idea, I made one for mine.

Rick, your right, it does put a strain on it in Low,,lol,,, and mines a 500 Rubicon 500 cc(not 550), well really 499cc to be exact, but I thought it had more horse then that, thanks for telling me the approx horse to CC's, I didnt know that.
I always thought as a rule of thumb that when trying to compare cc's to horse power, say if you have like 900 cc's you just take the end number off say like 900 and that gives you the approx horse? so 900 cc's would be approx 90 horse? I know its hard to compare cc's with horse power though.

Hi,
Brooks when you pull it 6 to 9 inches you are plowing instead of sub soiling. lol The tractor I have is really a stong pulling tractor for its size and the sub soiler has no problem stalling it.
Take care and good luck,
Doug

I too need to bust up the hard pan in my clay patch. I have a tractor and will find a subsoiler (rent/buy) my question is the patch is pretty wet this spring (as usual) will I cause more harm than good running the full sized 4x4 tractor over the patch?

Thanks in advance,

Gad's .....I believe that it depends on the clay/moisture content of the soil. If you can squeeze any water from a handful of soil, then it is too wet to "work". I tried too early last year and discovered that I actually damaged the "tilth" or texture of the soil.

after I get done tilling I run the sub soiler threw, ether way I look at it , its going down deeper then what my tiller went or could go.

I would take a tractor in a heart beat over a four wheeler also!!, Id like to have a tractor like Stan has, just the size I need.
I know I can get my best deal if I buy a tractor off Dave Stelts, I been wanting to buy one for the last couple years now, just cant do it!!,,,But I will someday,,, I keep telling him.LOL!!

Jerry,
I been wanting to stop by your place for the last 4 years or so , but every time I was in your area I ether had to get home or it was to late by the time I realized I was in your area ,seems like I always remember about a hour after I already passed through,,lol But I will take you up on that offer for sure someday, Ill call you first ahead of time.

I know my sub soiler isnt going down deep into the clay like a regular sub soiler does, but I am turning the very tip top layer, not enough I know, but enough for what I have to work with, better then nothing I guess, lol.

I got a better idea Jerry, bring your sub soiler and tractor over and Ill buy the beer,,lol!! Its only about a 3 hr drive,,,haha

My soil has a hard layer of clay about 8" down I need to break it up and mix it in. I will have to make several passes with the tool I thoinking building.

The Troy is about all I have to use.

................

Brooks, your ATV is probably closer to 30hp than 50. That and WAY less torque than a 35hp tractor and even less weight.

Drop a single shank 18" and it can stop a 35hp 4 wheel drive tractor in it's tracks.

We need a video of the wheeler pulling the single shank. Link to youtube please. :)

You might be a redneck if.......

Brooks, my Kawasaki 700 v-twin engine puts out 50 hp and 60 ft/lbs torque stock,,can't imagine yours only puts out 15 hp but it sounds like Rick knows his stuff, probably got a good bit more torque though,, those hondas are built like rocks, I got a friend that plows and discs with his Rancher, great farm machines! My first AG(656) was pulled outta the garden on a pallet with my 330 Polaris, almost flipped her over pulling but did the job, lol.
