I'd like to hear some predictions on what people think will be the biggest pumpkin of the year, who it will be grown by and what seed will it come from? Also, what are some of your "sleeper seeds" that will make noise at the weigh-offs this year?

Heck...this is always fun.
I'm guessing the 1161 Rodonis seed will have the best year of all seeds in 2009.
I guess Kevin Marsh will grow the largest pumpkin at 1640 lbs., from the 1161 Rodonis. I hope you're growing that seed Kevin LOL.

I agree Doug, the 1161 Rodonis is loaded with muscle top to bottom. You give Quinn Werner + another top notch 1161 + long warm summer = #1 grower taking it to the house. How big? 1570 to 1700.

Sleeper seeds. In the East, how can you not like Jim Kuhns 1209 ( 1385 Jutras X 1566 Rodonis ). In the West, Jim Sherwoods 1367 could be a brute, heavy genetics and size running through & through this cross ( 1028.5 Sherwood x 1502 Wallace )

I would think one or more of the 1600 could do well (hopefully my 1184) should be fun to watch to see which one come out of the pack

Perhaps the 1133 Kline08 (1631 McKie x 1041 McKie) for a surprise this year sure!

Quinn Werner with his own 1413 seed, the guy is way over due to bust a world record.

You got to like Quinn Werner in 2009. I'm saying he goes over 1,600 this year with a 1363 or 1161. I think another potential 1,600+ grower will be Thad Starr. Maybe with his own 1325. If he would have gone only 3% heavy the last two years he would have been around the 1,600 mark. Of course you can never count our Joe Jutras. I think he does it with his 1306.

Captain Cold Weather

Boulder County Colorado USA planet Earth

It all depends on the weather, here in Colorado we are drier than normal,We haven't gotten our normal March snowin the mountains, Which will make our snow cap fall below the thirty yr average If we have water restrictions this yr(limiting us on when and how much we can water. I expect Colorado growers to do ok, But if we don't have water restrictions this yr I expect that Colorado growers will continue the rise in weight.

We had 3 pumpkins over 1100 pounds one by Joe S and 2 by Mad Man.

We had 6 growers over 1000 Joe, Mad man Mike, Wiz, Biz and the prettiest pumpkin over 1000 Longmont Pete's 1004 mohr. That is 4 new growers over the 1000 mark.

2 groups of families (having 2 members over 1000) made it over 1000 Maddman marc and Mike , And Wiz and Biz.

Plus we had some new growers do well, Ross, Jamie, Daisy jo.

But the one new grower who didn't do well, do to stuff beyond his control. I think Worm man, will suprise everyone this yr. His knowledge is amazing. My vote is someday hewill be a serious threat at the Colorado Springs weigh off.

Who knows maybe dad and I will get a pumpkin over 500 pounds this yr. Our goal is more ribbons than last yr and placing in the to 5 at a weigh off.

But the battle for Colorado's best grower is a tough one to call. Both have great expenerice both have knowledge One has had the state record since 2000 with three diff records, the other has produced two 1100 pounders.and with his own seed.

Colorado Springs last yr doubled their water bills forcing growers there to pay more to grow pumpkins. This was a huge factor to why the Colorado Springs weigh off wasn't as good as Jared's weigh off.

I think this years seed will be a unknown one that produces the big one! Or one that no one thought had a chance.1700lbsThe weather in the ohio vally and most of the easdt coast is exspecting god growing weather.

I predict pain and suffering for the Wiz and the Biz, Also Whining, crying, and plain old grovelling,
As for pumpkins, Don Young will come through again, and I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Russ Landry give it a good run for the top. Don Young on the 1068 Wallace anf Russ on the 901 Hunt or 1142 Vankooten

J.D. we must think alike...After I posted, I though that the 1209 Kuhn would be a great choice for the sleeper seed. A great cross, it was quite heavy to the chart, and from the pic I saw of it, it looked very structurally sound from the outside.

3/12/2009 1:14:34 PM

hey you

Greencastle, PA

1.Quinn Werner will grow a 1700 pound pumpkin on his 1413.5
2.Quinn will cross a nice 1161 with the 1413.5
3. Someone in Michigan will grow a 1500+ on the 1413.5
4. The Checkons will make their best effort to get back on top this year, they will set new personal bests
5. There will be a couple 1600+ from the 1385 Jutras
6. The return of the 1354!
7. Some sleepers will rise and shine (maybe 1130 Jutras, 1237 McKie, 720 Rose)
8. The GPC regions will have to be updated after California is annexed by Mexico
9. Eddy Z will be very happy with his 882.
10. The 1350 Starr will grow one over 1500 that will weigh more than 20% heavy

I will go out on a limb, and say that Kentucky will set a new state record again this year!!! Cletus is wound up tighter than an 8 day clock, the old man has a new plan, plus several new growers are on board, and Festus's better half (wife) is donna be a growin one in pure worm castings in the back yard!!! Don't forget about Mr. Orange, Mrs. Bend, or Dwight!!! Hope I dint forget anyone!!! Well, dammmn I guess I almost left out dem fellers from Bear Waller Farms....Larry & Billy...(GROW BILLY GROW)!!!
PS...prbly gonna have to keep this dammmnnn cap another year!!! Peace, Wayne

I think its going to be a great season.A world contender could be from anywhere.Southern ontario is due for a monster.I'm expecting the 1161 rodonis,1350 starr,1268.5 hunt,1255 van kooten,991 urena,1568 connolly and 1413 werner to produce and dont forget the 1385.5J

I think we will have lots of good ones but I think the 1689 has raised the bar so high that we will never see records broke every year like we have before the 1689. I think 1700 plus is a very real possibility but it may take a while. Perfect weather is a must and in 12 years of growing I have only seen one year that everything seemed to go just right.

Agreed Matt. All the tools are there. It's just a matter of which lucky grower gets that perfect weather.
