So a gal I know at work is getting married this fall, she wants to have numerous field pumpkins at her reception. Being that the little I know about pumpkins is of the large variety, I was hoping to get some (any!) advice. Her first question is:
"I am trying to figure out how many seeds to order to get the quantity that I would like:
I am thinking:
Jack be Little’s 150-200 Baby Boo’s 150-200 Lumina’s 25-50 Connecticut Field 25-50
Any recommendation on how many seeds to order???"
Help anyone? Spring is on the way!

Lumina average 2-3 per plant Connecticut average 4-5 Baby boos and jack be littles 12-15
This is if you have no disease, insects, early frost, hail storms, patch elephants, and anything else left up to the imagination.
Also remember 1/4 of all pumpkins never leave the field due to quality issues. Its sort of like planting a giant pumpkin, just because you put the seed in the ground doesn't mean you get to harvest one.

In my experience of growing Connecticut fields I've had between 4-8 pumpkins on a good healthy plant, seems the smaller the pumpkin generally the more fruit on the vine, hope this helps

Try rare seeds.com Have you thought of other varities such as Galeux, Iran, Queensland, These are really pretty and unique.
What about a big AG pumpkin as a centerpeace?
What about gourds? if u have pumpkins you got to have gourds.
Plant twice as many plants as you think u will get. Better to have to many than not enough.
I had a friend who did this for his brother. Luckily he planted 3 times what he needed. brides mother gave away a lot of pumpkins before the weeding. Then she began to panic when she relized that there may not be enough.lol
My recomedation is to plant 3 times what u need( lots of factors can contribute to a dismal harvest) Tell everyone that the wedding reception gets first dibbs on the pumpkins. Have one person incharge of it with everyone else following orders.

Speaking of rare varieties, does anyone know the name of a pale squash with very pale meat, the lighter the meat the better? Thanks.

Thanks gang, keep it coming please! I have no idea of fields. By the way, good to be back after quitting AG's again last fall, I may plant a couple after all (again). I really do hate this hobby just so you know.

i have raised field pumpkins for quit awhile. you may want to plant a gold dust instead of the jack be littles they are same size but gold dust is alot better looking.email me at dkslone2@suddenlink i will let you have enough seeds of each so you don't have to buy any. Dwight
