I thought with all the growers who visit the site, maybe we can be apart of a grass roots movement to save jobs or do what we can anyone. The problem is, we don't want a free trade agreement, we want a fair trade agreement. They just don't seem to be getting that one. Meaning, workers in other countries are paid the same, not cheaper job markets.
I'd first like to mention Hanes. The sock and underwear people. Who've closed their S.C. plant after 100 years and moved it to Vietnam where they pay those workers $30 a week instead. Don't buy Hanes, if you can help it.
The next is Disney. For example, the tee-shirts they charge us $14-$24 for, cost them 14 cents each on average. To make in India. Where they force young women to work 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, but only pay them for 8 hours aday. The enslaved women wrote the Executives and CEOs at Disney in Florida about it, asking for 1 day a week off and to be paid for 10 hours that they work.
The Disney Executives and CEOs response? They had them all fired and replaced, changed nothing. I know this is a hard one, especially if you have children. But don't buy Disney and don't buy Hanes.
Of course, I don't know if companies like Fruit of the Loom are off the hook. But I figure, with as many growers as there are visiting the site, we could be a force to be reckoned with as a whole group.
