This year I have decided to go with an heirloom theme garden (minus a couple AGs and a few Big Zacs). Does anyone have any "must grow" heirloom vegetables suggestions (of any kind)? I have ordered most of my seeds, but should someone suggest something, I may have to order some more!

Danvers Half Long, Oxheart, Thumbelina, carrots; Brandywine tomatoes; Lake bush beans, um... go to burpee.com, they have had a heirloom catalog for some time.

That's a great link Mark. I've ordered from them for a number of years now. Marianna's Peace is one of my favorite beefsteak tomatoes. Makes great BLT's. Sioux is a very nice medium red tomato. Tangy!

Brandywine Sudduth Strain is one of the finest maters ever. Like Linus suggested Rattlesnake beans are a tasty pole bean. There are a few others with cool names and good flavor "Fat Man. "Lazy Wife", and "Tobacco Worm" are good ones as well. Early Jersey Wakefield cabbage I hear is great. I'll be growing it this year fior the first time.

You won't regret making the switch to heirlooms - they're all I've grown my entire life and trust me, they are vastly superior to modern varieties.
I prefer Dragon Tongue beans above all others. The plants produce an incredible amount of beans and the flavor is out of this world. With heirloom tomatoes - I plant around 50 varieties each year, so it's hard for me to recommend just a few. All of the Brandywines are excellent choices, as are 1884 and German Queen. It just depends on the flavor you're looking for!
Seed Savers Exchange is a great organization dedicated to protecting heirloom varieties from genetic erosion. If you become a member you will have access to more seeds than you will know what to do with. www.seedsavers.org
The following is a link to one of the best tomato sites you will find...their TomatoFest in Carmel is legendary! www.tomatofest.com
Good luck! Kelly
