I find the trust remarkable amongst pumpkin growers when it comes to seed exchanges, whether it is auctions, or the seed exchange threads here. Anyone could offer a seed that is not what it is advertised. We are just classy honest folks here I guess. I think we are role models for the youth today, and those in Washington as well.

99 and 9/10 percent of the growers would never think of cheating or stealing anyone elses money by misrepresenting a seed or situation for that matter.

however one must be cautious and seek assurances before aquiring any seed from a second or third party. why spend all year on the risk its a fake.

thats why i believe auctions and club promos and raffles are a good way go.
seeds aquired for these fundraisers usually come right from the grower or the clubs member who in turn got it from the grower.

Pap is right! I've been around this hobby for over ten years and there have been very few "scam artists" that pass through BP.com. However....when they do....let me tell you that a "major stink" occurs immediately when they are discovered.

We police our hobby very well!

I know a few growers that can spot a fake just by looking at the seed. It doesnt work well in this hobby to fake a seed.

Not only for me but for alot of growers that trade seeds, this is a major pet peeve of mine when ever I seed trade, and I also expect the same with the seed Im trading. First off I never trade a seed with someone I dont know very well, and if I dont feel good about a trade I just dont trade.I always double check my seed trades with the original grower to make sure they are real, even when I buy my seed at auctions I have a seed verified for me. More often times then not I will send the seed out snail mail in a bubble to have the seed verified for me, but I have found putting them in your computer paper scanner and scanning a copy of the seed works just as good. Mostly every grower I trade with understands when I have a seed checked, and 99.9% of them doesn't take it personal when I do it. Its not that I dont trust the grower at all, that isnt why I do it , its because of where the seed come from before they had it is why . In high insight the grower who had that seed might truly believe they have the real thing, and 99% of the time they do have it, but there is always that slim chance they might not. It just gives good peace of mind knowing your growing the original seed when all your hard work goes into growing a seed for 5 months. No one wants to be growing a seed that they are planning cross's for and working so hard to grow a personal best with and having just that little bit of doubt in the back of there minds that it might not be the real deal.

What other hobby allows a person to make so many contacts and friends?? Why fake a seed and risk losing all that is shared among growers no matter where they are?? The clubs are fantastic.

All we have is faith in the brotherhood.

Like Pap said; 99.99% of the time there is no problem.

Gardner is totally right! This great sport allows you to meet new friends and swap seeds. No reason to risk that..Also if you ever send someone a phony seed none will give or trade you seeds.

Gardeners are the best, I think for the most part it is handed down to us from an earlier generation of people of integraty. It may just be one the purist pusuits left for folks. I believe the 99% figure I keep seeing.

I have a few seeds that have serial numbers on them.

That way if a fruit only produces 500 seeds there is no way to grow 700 plants from it.
