gj got me thinking when he was talking about keeping the roots contained to a small area. i thought about placing some plastic in the bottom of the pit. a few days later i saw some pictures where someone had planted thier ags in a peat moss bag with thier special soil ingredients. if i recall they had a couple that went 1000lbs. or more. now i'm wondering if anyone else does this?

id rather let the roots grow out and find the nutrients needed. also oxygen would be lacking if roots were in a bag. think of yourself trying to breath with a bag over your head.? not good.

I have heard that mary jane growers do that in marshy areas up here in Ontario. They bring a large bale of peat moss or pro mix into the swamp and set it above the water line partly submerged with holes punched in the bottom of the plastic bag. A grow op farmer will not need to water the plant all summer. He simply returns to the scene in Mid September and collects the harvested profits.

You're weed info is right Russ. I've collected some very nice plants that were grown so that the roots were at the water table an no watering was required.

Some of the best ideas come from Maximum Yield, (http://www.maximumyield.com/) its an industry standard magazine that is straight forward and has well written article in layman's terms
The pro mix bale method...EH...It certainly would be the lazy mans form of hydroponics...EH!
However, I prefer to slave away at my pumpkin plants for hours upon hours each summer. A pumpkin growers work never ends....there is no magic bullet.

Sounds absurd to put a bag around the root system. I think it would attract all kinds of root disease.
