I am always looking for tools to make my life easier. Tools that I purchased last year that really made a difference in 2008 for me were: a stirrup hoe, whizzer sprinkler heads, a 4 gallon rechargeable, battery operated backpack sprayer, and an extension lopper, to be used for trimming off tertiary vines and male blossoms.

being able to use a bigger tractor/w bigger tiller attachment, a buddie from work has used his in my patch for the last 3 seasons, spring and fall soil prep. Him letting me use his equipment has saved me a bunch of work and lots of time! I Been saying the last 3 seasons Im going to buy one, but never get the guts enough to pull the trigger to buy one...lol. If anyone is looking at buying a John Deer tractor, Dave Stelts is the man to talk to for a great deal on one.

I got it at Lazyboy, Gardener division. They have an outlet here in the Springs. My only regret is I didn't get the telescoping tv screen so I could watch football while I turned the soil.

The automatic greenhouse openers for sure and an extendable pruner from Lee Valley tools that made pruning plants much quicker and had less impact on soil compaction.

Paying someone else to do the serious digging and tilling. Then I don't have to own and STORE the stuff.

I also bought a TroyBilt Pony rottotiller. It was so much more powerful than my Sears model that when I used it for the first time I press the gas, got dragged, and flipped it. It however does a great job. I think I will get my son to do the rottotilling! lol

Water Pressure in the patch.
I was watering the whole patch, out of trickle fed water barrels, with 2 x 2 gal. water cans.
I replaced a large section of Iron and Copper pipe and fittings, that it turned out were clogged.
Then BAM!! 35PSI water in the patch!!!
Those sprinklers do work!!!
This year I got a used tiller and plan to give the patch it's first ever shallow till.
Thanks AHAB.

Kathyt a Troybuilt is designed to be held back by the wheels if you lift up on the handles the wheels will hold back the unit! Lower the tines slowly when its tilling! Do not increase downward pressure or you will get dragged & flip!

Thanks for the advice regarding my tiller WC. I almost had a coronary when that thing flipped. It wasn't even paid for yet!

Lol- My lawn chair nearby under a shade tree. A good place to take breaks and just admire nature's miracle of the fantastic growth rate of AGs.
There is nothing like watching a sunrise or sunset over my patch.

Kathyt,

I got a new tiller myself and decided to try the "Fast" gear. I went through the back of the privacy fence. Fixed it before the wife found out and the tiller was just fine.

Fine tuned my technique and no more worries. I laugh now everytime I think about it. Really Funny!

It was fast gear that I used as well. I never thought twice about. It was fast gear that always used with my Sears brand rottotiller. The salesman said that the new rottotiller would be more powerful. This was was an understatement. I didn't think that I would need a crash helmet! LOL
