Especially if you're a new grower, remember, root growth and development is why vegetables are side dressed and not top dressed. Meaning the fertilizer is applied in bands between row of plants. It's why you fertilize trees around the drip line and not around the base of the trunk. A tall tree with a small root ball means the tree topples over in a high wind. Always remember the wisdom that a closed circle means a closed mind. People simply run out of ideas and stop being open to any new ones from the outside. At that point have become a cult full of cult worshippers, who if you don't agree with their religious views on the subject, they try to stone you, banish you, silence you in any way they can. This was going to be the my daughter's first year of growing. And I would personally like to thank the grower who thought it a real hoot to send her all broken seed and then not make good on their promise to replace them. Just because her Dad is me. No one has to worry any longer. I won't grow an AG again. Doing what they did to my daughter is sinking to a new low. Good people? Some growers have left that question in grave doubt. Especially when the person who did it to her is revered as being high up.

OMG!! That's terrible! I think we might have a epidemic on our hands, and somehow we need to stop this! One of my best growing buddies from Colorado had this almost exact situation happen to him! He received a bubble in the mail and went to pull the seed out of the package and accidentally dropped the seed on the floor before planting it, and when it hit the ground it shattered into a million pieces! Here to find out all the seeds where booby trapped and was made out of ''ICE''. Till this day my buddy BIZ hasn't found out who has done this to him, and his daughter ended up hating him for it.
Someone tried this same exact trick as you speak of, with one of the best proven seeds in the world, but I out smarted them, I went to Wal-Mart and bought some Elmer's wood glue number 7 and glued all my seeds back together, they all sprouted fine and I ended up growing a personal best! Good thing about the Elmer's glue that I found out is that it works like a fungicide, it helped the seed from dampening off, so it really worked in my advantage, and I also found out it works real well to fix broken and smashed vines. One bad thing about the entire situation is that I did end up getting sick from eating the Elmer's wood glue number 7, its not the same glue as we once ate when we was in school,we still need to learn to read the label.

Remember when you used to pour Elmer's Glue all over the palm of your hand, and wait for it to dry, then slowly peel it off?

Jack, Could it be that the seeds were damaged in the mail? I've heard of this happening. I haven't researched side dressing of fertilizer, but plan on doing so. Thanks for your input.

Wouldn't side dressing be sort of like putting sunscreen on only some parts of your body? Side dressing is used in commercial growing..Giant Pumpkin growing is a whole new ball game.

An earlier post said Jack grew a 800+ pumpkin. I would think that's just a story also. It takes all kinds.

Jack- Growers are very a generous group of people. If the seeds were damaged in the mail, there are many growers who would send seeds.A SAS bubble would do the trick.
